Parliament elects Jioji Konrote as President

Jioji Konrote, the Minister for Employment, Productivity and Industrial Relations, has been elected by Fiji’s parliament to be the country’s next President.

Konrote took 31 votes to 14 votes for his opponent opposition candidate Ratu Epeli Ganilau.

Fiji Broadcasting Corporation reports the Speaker of Parliament Dr Jiko Luveni as saying, “In accordance with Section 84 Clause 3 of the 2013 Constitution, Major General Jioji Konusi Konrote having received the support of the majority of the Members of Parliament present is appointed as the President of the Republic of Fiji by Parliament.”
