Parliament to convene on Thursday

Published

President Bashar Al-Assad has decreed that a new session of parliament will convene on Thursday 24th May. Although few details have emerged about the election on 7th May, we do know that turnout was 51.26% according to the electoral commission and that the National Unity Alliance which supports the president took 183 of the 250 seats in the new People’s Assembly.

Meanwhile the violence continues across the country, despite the presence of a United Nations observers team, with indications that recent bombing in and around the capital have been instigated by a third force possibly linked to Al Qaeda.

It is difficult to see how the election of the new parliament will help to resolve the internal strife with many of the opposition leaders who were prepared to stand in the election not being successful in gaining representation to the legislature.
