Mongolia

Parliamentary election today

Published

The voters of Mongolia will have a choice of 544 candidates from 11 political parties and two coalitions in today’s vote for the 76 seats in the State Great Hural (Parliament).

The General Election Commission says that there are 1,833,478 eligible candidates and that polling will take place from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. local time.

Opinion polls suggest that the opposition Democratic Party (DP) has a slight lead over the ruling Mongolian People’s Party (MPP). In the last election in 2008 the DP took 27 seats and the MPP took 46 seats.

The two parties worked together in a coalition after the last election and there is an indication that they may do so again.
