Peña Nieto claims victory

Published

Preliminary reports appear to show that the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) are back in power after a break of 12 years, with Enrique Peña Nieto claiming victory in the presidential election. His opponent, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador of the Democratic Revolution Party, has refused to concede defeat at this stage, saying he will wait for official results.

Mr Pena Nieto appears to have won about 38% of the vote, with Lopez Obrador on 31% and third placed candidate, Josefina Vazquez Mota of the ruling National Action Party on 25%. New Alliance candidate, Gabriel Quadri, received less than 10% of the vote.
