East Timor

PM party set to win election

Published

With around two thirds of votes counted it looks as though Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão’s National Congress for Timorese Reconstruction (CNRT) has won around 36.6% of the vote in yesterday’s general election.

The Revolutionary Front for an Independent East Timor (FRETILIN) is in second place with 29.8% and the Democratic Party (PD) which is a member of the current ruling coalition is on 10.3%.

In 2007 the CNRT was second with 24.1% of the vote and their significantly better showing this time will result in a big increase in their 18 seat tally in the 65 seat National Parliament of East Timor.

Official results may still take several days to come through and the number of seats apportioned to each party has yet to be announced.
