Poll set for 25th November

Published

Interior Minister Taieb Cherkaoui confirmed early today that the general election will be held on 25th November, almost a year earlier than scheduled.

An original date of 11th November had been put forward but this was considered to be too close to Eid Al-Adha or Festival of Sacrifice, an important Muslim religious festival which is expected on 6th or 7th November. The next available Friday is the 18th which is Independence Day and therefore the 25th is the first practical and available date.

A number of revisions to electoral law are expected before the election. Currently the Assembly of Representatives has 325 members elected to serve a five year term.
