Laos

Polling day today

Published

The 3.2 million voters of Laos go to the polls today to choose from 190 candidates for their newly enlarged 132 seat National Assembly (previously 115 seats).

Voting will take place across 6,324 polling stations in 17 constituencies from 7.30 a.m. to 5 p.m. local time.

Of the 190 candidates, 47 are from central government, 143 are local officials, 45 are previous assembly members, four are from state owned enterprises (SOEs) and four from private enterprises.

Laos is a communist state with one legal party. The National Assembly is largely a rubber stamping body, although they have criticised government in the past. In June they will form the new government, although this will be based largely on the decisions taken at the five yearly congress which took place in March and was attended by 600 of the top party officials.
