Polls open in Togo

Published

The polls have opened for parliamentary elections in Togo. Polling hours are 7 a.m. – 4 p.m. today and a total of 1,174 candidates are standing for 91 seats.

These elections are the first legislative polls to be held since 2007. Voting was to have taken place in October 2012, but a series of protests by Let’s Save Togo, a coalition of opposition and civil society groups, have caused delays. The movement has been pushing for sweeping electoral reforms and opposed last minute changes to electoral law which they said would have benefitted the ruling party.

Around three million people have registered to vote out of a population of about seven million.
