Pranab is President

The ruling United Progressive Alliance (UPA) got its mad elected yesterday to be the next president of India.

Pranab Mukherjee of the Indian national Congress (INC), the dominant party in the UPA, took 3,095 votes with a weighted value of 713,763 whilst his opponent, P.A. Sangma and Independent with the backing of the opposition BJP took 1,483 votes with a weighted value of 315,987.

Mr. Mukherjee will be sworn in on Wednesday 25th July by the Chief Justice of India, S.H. Kapadia.

Mr. Mukherjee (76) was elected to parliament in 1969. He has a degree in History and Political Science as well as a law degree. From 1995 to 1996 he was the Minister of External Affairs. Prior to that he had been Minister of finance (1982 to 1984) a post he took again in 2009 and which he resigned in 2012 to stand as president. He was also Minister of defence from 2004 to 2006 and has held a large number of party and other formal positions during his long career. Mr. Mukherjee is married with three children.

The Vice president will be elected on 7th August.
