President’s party wins majority

Published

President Boni Yayi’s party, the Cauri Forces for an Emerging Benin have won 41 of the 83 seats in the Beninese National Assembly. Along with a further 11 seats won by smaller parties backing the president, this will give him a majority in the parliament for the first time.

In 2007 the president’s party had 35 seats and were blocked by the opposition. This time the opposition coalition, Build the Nation Union, led by Adrien Houngbédji’s Democratic Renewal Party took 31 seats.

The results were announced by electoral commission chairman Joseph Gnonlonfoun at a press conference and the results are provisional until confirmed by the constitutional court.
