President asks Andrej Plenković to form a government

Following the 11th September general election, President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović, has invited President of the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) Andrej Plenković to form a government. The HDZ have reached an agreement with the centrist Bridge of Independent Lists (MOST) to form a coalition government. Between them they have 74 seats but need 76 seats to form a majority. However, Plenković is said to have the support of 91 Deputies in the 151 seat parliament and has 30 days in which to form a Cabinet.

The formal announcement as published on the presidential website is as follows:

“The President of the Republic Issued a Decision on Entrusting the Mandate to Form the Government of the Republic of Croatia to Andrej Plenković

In accordance with her Constitutional authorities, the President of the Republic Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović presented the President of the Croatian Democratic Union Andrej Plenković with the mandate to form the 14th Croatian Government.

In congratulating Prime-Minister Designate Plenković and wishing him to compose and gain confidence for the new Government as soon as possible, President Grabar-Kitarović expressed her satisfaction with the election process. She emphasized that within this election process all actors and participants of political life have shown responsibility and proven that they all want the next Croatian Government to be stable, constructive and effective.

“I believe that as of today we are entering a new phase of Croatian political life, where political, social and other areas of life will be dominated by cooperation in primarily solving essential existential issues for Croatia, from economic, to demographic, social, developmental and other issues,˝ added the President of the Republic.

She emphasized that this is extremely important for Croatia right now and that Croatian citizens recognize this as well. ˝They all expect the process to be expeditious and that it will result in the new Government taking over the responsibility for all the processes in the country as soon as possible.˝

The President of the Republic expressed her conviction that in the period ahead there will also be ˝much more constructive cooperation of all levers of State authority for the benefit of Croatia.˝
