President Goodluck Jonathan misses TV debate

Published

Incumbent president Goodluck Jonathan did not attend a debate screened on Nigerian news channel NN24 on Friday (18th March 2011).

Instead there was an empty podium next to other presidential candidates Muhammadu Buhari, Nuhu Ribadu and Ibrahim Shekaru. A spokesperson for the president said that the invitation had been sent too late and that he would be appearing on a debate on 29th March.

President Jonathan has been trying to woo young voters, launching his campaign on Facebook and seeking to link with them through popular DJs and radio programmes. His failure to turn up to the debate last night appears to have had the opposite effect with many negative comments reported on blogs and Twitter.
