President stands down ten months early

Published

President Boris Tadić has resigned as president ten months early. The presidential election will now coincide with the legislative and local elections scheduled for 6th May.

Although the move will have financial benefits to the country in calling all elections on one day, it is likely to have also been a tactical move by the president to help ensure a successful conclusion for his ruling Democratic Party. The president will stand for re-election.

The president stressed that the move was to allow all institutions to move forward together on making important reforms to the country. He has stressed the importance of pushing forward with Serbia’s application to join the European Union and said that his campaign would focus on the economy. President Tadić reiterated that he would not recognise Kosovo.
