President wins general election

Allies of President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov won just about all of the 125 seats in the Majlis or parliament in last Sunday’s general election.

The election, heralded as the country’s first multi-party election, saw the president’s Democratic Party win 47 of the 125 seats. The Party of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs, which was established at the behest of the President, took 14 seats and will form a sort of opposition. The remaining seats were won by civic groups, trade unions and other independents most of whom are allied to the president.

Turnout was 91.33%.
