Presidential election announced

President Jose Ramos-Horta has announced that the next presidential election will take place on 17th March. A second round, if required is scheduled for the third week in April.

This will be the second presidential election of the former Portuguese colony which received independence in 2002. Prior to that the country had been annexed by Indonesia for 24 years.

President Ramos-Horta has said that he will decide closer to the date as to whether he will stand or not.
