Presidential election confirmed

Published

Following the death of President Malam Bacai Sanha on 9th January a presidential election has been confirmed for Sunday 18th March. The announcement was made by acting president Raimundo Pereira and has received support from the main opposition leader.

Guinea-Bissau has a history of violence centred on politics. Most recently President João Bernardo Vieira was assassinated in 2009 leading to widespread violence. In December last year, whilst President Sanha was seeking medical treatment in Paris, an attempted coup was foiled.
