Presidential election date announced

The Somali parliament has announced that it will elect a new president on 10th September.

The date has been delayed on numerous occasions and was last due to be held on 20th August. Delays in forming the parliament required a new date to be set. Now that the parliament is formed and sitting as well as having selected a new Speaker, it is in a position to move forward with the presidential election.

Outgoing president Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed is the favourite to win the election, although as many as 50 names have been mentioned. The election will take place as an electoral college of parliamentarians.
