Head of the Supreme Committee for Elections, Farouk Sultan, announced in a press conference yesterday that the Egyptian presidential election will take place on 23rd and 24th May.

Nominations for the election will be on 10th March and there will be a twenty-one day election period running from 30th April. The result of the election will be announced on 21st June and if a second round runoff is required then this will take place on 16th and 17th June.

There have been a lot of rumours about who will be standing. At the moment it looks like former prime minister Ahmed Shafiq, former head of the Arab League and Foreign minister Amr Moussa, and possibly Islamist candidates including Abdel Moneim Abol Fotoh and Hazem Abu Ismail.
