Presidential election goes to second round on 25th May

Published

Incumbent President Dalia Grybauskaitė has fallen short of an outright victory in yesterday’s presidential election.

President Grybauskaitė took 46.02% of the vote, falling short of the 50%+ required and will now face Zigmantas Balčytis of the Social Democratic Party of Lithuania (LSDP), who took 14.18% of the vote, in a second round runoff on 25th May. Artūras Paulauskas of the Labour Party (DP) was the only other candidate to get double digit figures, taking 12.74% of the vote.

Grybauskaitė led in all but six of the 60 Municipalities in the country.

At one point there had been concern that the turnout would not reach 50% of eligible voters, but in the end turnout was 52.14% and will be higher on 25th May because it coincides with the European election polling day.
