Presidential election goes to second round

The Independent Electoral Commission has announced that with 98% of the ballot counted from the 31st January poll there will be a need for a second round runoff on 12th March 2011.

Front runner from the first round is Mahamdou Issoufou of the PNDS Tarayya with 36% of the vote.  His opponent in the second round will be former Prime Minister Seini Oumarou who received 23% of the vote.

A total of ten candidates stood in the first round which was said to be peaceful and well conducted.
