Presidential election second round on 14th June

The Independent Electoral Commission of Afghanistan has released the final results of the first round of the presidential election which took place on 5th April.

There was no clear winner with Abdullah Abdullah taking 2,972,141 votes or 45% of the vote and Ashraf Ghani taking 2,084,547 votes or 31.56%. Zalmai Rassoul came third with 750,997 votes and 11.37%. No other candidate scored more than 10% of the vote.

A second round runoff will now take place on 14th June 2014.
