Sao Tome and Principe is holding its presidential election today with 111,222 people eligible to vote.

There are five candidates standing but only three have any serious chance. They are incumbent president, Manuel Pinto da Costa, Evaristo Carvalho of the centrist Independent Democratic Action and Maria das Neves of the Movement for the Liberation of São Tomé and Príncipe – Social Democratic Party (MLSTP-PSD).

In 2011 Manuel Pinto da Costa beat nine other candidates including the two standing against him today. He received 52.88% of the vote with Evaristo Carvalho coming second with 47.12% in the second round.

There is a large overseas vote based on Sao-Toméens living in Libreville or Lisbon.
