Presidential election today

Published

Guinea-Bissau is holding a presidential election today following the death of former president Malam Bacai Sanha in January in a French hospital.

There are nine candidates contesting the election in a country which is renowned for coup attempts and a strong military presence.

The frontrunner candidate is probably Carlos Gomes JĂșnior (62) who was prime minister prior to stepping down to fight the election. He is the candidate of the ruling African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC).

Other candidates include former president Kumba Yala (59), Independent Henrique Rosa (66) a former transitional president and Manuel Serifo Nhamadjo, a former PAIGC member.

Campaigning has been very peaceful during the campaign according to all reports. If no candidate receives more than 50% of the vote there will be a second round runoff next month.

Around 593,000 electors will be voting between 8 a.m. and 7 p.m. local time.
