Sao Tome and Principe

Presidential election today

Published

Voting has started in this Gulf of Guinea state off the West African coast to elect a new President. Incumbent Fradique de Menezes has completed his two terms in office and is barred from standing again.

The front runner is former president Manuel Pinto da Costa who is running on an anti-corruption platform. Although he formed the party he is not the formal candidate of the Movement for the Liberation of São Tomé and Principe/Social Democratic Party (MLSTP/PSD) which goes to Aurélio Martins.

Martins, however, was not accepted by many in his party and two other members of the party, Maria das Neves (who has the support of Fradique de Menezes) and Elsa Pinto.

The Independent Democratic Action (ADI) candidate is Evaristo de Carvalho. The ADI is currently the largest party in the parliament.

There are 92,638 voters and they will be voting between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. local time.
