Kyrgyzstan

Presidential election underway

Published

Around 3.03 million voters will attend 2,289 polling stations at home and 29 in overseas missions today to vote for a new president. Voting started at 8 a.m. and will close at 7 p.m. local time.

Although there are sixteen candidates, the favourite is former prime minister Almazbek Atambayev. Two other frontrunners are Kamchybek Tahiyev of the Ata-Zhurt (Fatherland) party and former Speaker Adahan Madumarov.

The former president Kurmanbek Bakiyev was ousted in an uprising in April 2010 and since then the interim president has been Roza Otunbayeva who is not permitted to stand in this election.

Candidates have to take 50% plus one of the vote to win. If none reach this target then a second round runoff will be arranged for the top two polling candidates.
