Presidential elections today

Published

Although the presidential election has been boycotted by the major political parties, 4.8 million of the 11.1 million people in Chad will be eligible to vote for one of three remaining candidates today.

On Saturday thousands gathered in the capital N’Djamena for a rally to reinforce the boycott but it is unlikely to stop Idriss Déby the current president from winning a fourth term. The other two candidates, Albert Pahimi Padacke and Nadji Madon come from minor parties.

Déby’s party, the Patriotic Salvation Movement won the general election in February with a large margin, taking 133 of the 188 seats in parliament.
