Presidential poll today

Published

Eight candidates will be standing in the presidential election today in Turkmenistan. In reality the incumbent president, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, is expected to win. He has ruled the Central Asian country since the death of Saparmurat Niyazov in December 2006.

Other candidates have campaigned but then praised the president in their speeches, leading most commentators to suggest that the other candidates are there to give a vaneer of democracy to the process.

There are 2,987,324 people eligible to vote across 2,307 polling stations from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The other seven candidates are:

Recep Bazarov, the deputy head of Dashoguz province
Kakageldy Abdyllayev, a departmental head at Turkmengaz
Gurbanmammad Mollnyazov, an employee of Turkmenoil
Annageldy Yazmyradov, the Minister of Water Economy
Esenkuli Gayipov, an employee of the Ministry of Construction
Saparmyrat Batyrov, the director of a cotton mill
Yarmuhammet Orazgulyev, Minister of Energy and Industry.
