Russian Federation

Putin wins as expected

Published

Vladimir Putin has won his third term as president following yesterday’s presidential election. Near complete results suggest that he has won 63.97% of the vote, down from 71% of the vote when he last stood in 2004.

Gennady Zyuganov of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation (KPRF) came second with 17.18% of the vote and Vladimir Zhirinovsky of the Liberal Democratic Party of Russia (LDPR) came third with 8%.

The billionaire Independent, Mikhail Prokhorov, came next with 7.5% and finally Sergey Mironov of A Just Russia (CP or SR) came last with 3.67%.

Despite the use of cameras in polling centres there were widespread accusations of ballot rigging, with one monitoring centre recording more than 4,600 complaints. Anti-Putin protesters have organised a rally for today in central Moscow.
