Rebelo de Sousa is Portugal’s new President

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa of the centre-right Social Democratic Party (PSD) and backed by the CDS – People’s Party has won yesterday’s presidential election.

Rebelo de Sousa won 52% of the vote and 2,410,130 votes. In second place was the left-wing António Sampaio da Nóvoa who took 22.89% and 1,060769 votes. In third place was Marisa Matias of the left wing Left Bloc (BE) with 10.13% and 469,307 votes. None of the other seven candidates managed to gain more than 5% of the vote.

Turnout, as expected, was low at 48.84%. The new President will be inaugurated in March.
