Ruler dissolves parliament

Published

Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Sabah has dissolved parliament. The decision follows a request from the Cabinet after a long deadlock in the parliament.

Earlier this year a court ruling had dismissed the 2012 elected parliament and reinstated the 2009 parliament. Although the 2009 parliament had fewer opposition members it was still able to block the presentation of a budget and the passing of a $108 billion development plan.

New elections must now be held within 60 days although there is little chance that the new parliament will be any different in its makeup.
