Jamaica

Ruling party candidate wins by election

Published

Everald Warmington of the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) won the St Catherine by-election, taking 64% of the vote in the Labour stronghold.

The by-election was called because Mr Warmington had US citizenship. A legislator in Jamaica, an ex British colony, is not permitted to hold allegiance to a country outside the Commonwealth.

The by-election restores the six seat majority (32 seats to 28 seats) JLP has over the People’s National Party who boycotted the election.
