Ruling party win 21 of 23 councils

Published

The ruling United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) won 21 of the 23 councils in the last round of local elections yesterday. Crucially they failed to take the prized opposition United National Party (UNP) stronghold of Colombo. They also failed to take Kalmunai municipal council in Eastern Province which went to their coalition partners the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC).

Whilst the UNP retained Colombo by more than 24,000 votes, they did lose two other traditional strongholds, Kandy in the hilly central province and Dehiwala – Mount Lavinia, to the south of Colombo.

The tally, as published this morning is:

UPFA – 245 seats
UNP – 131 seats
SLMC – 11 seats
JVP – 5 seats
Others – 28 seats.
