Ruling party wins as opposition boycotts election

Azerbaijan’s ruling centre-right New Azerbaijan Party (YAP) has won yesterday’s general election, taking at least 70 of the 125 seats in the National Assembly or Milli Majlis according to preliminary results.

Most of the remaining seats were either won by independents or smaller parties loyal to President Ilham Aliyev. All the serious opposition parties boycotted the election after what opposition Musavat Party leader, Arif Gajily, described as “massive violations” in the pre-election period.

Turnout was 55.7%
