Runoff between Conservative and Green

Published

Following the first round of the presidential election yesterday, a runoff will now take place on 5th February.

The favourite to win, Sauli Niinstö of the ruling National Coalition Party (KOK), took 37% of the vote. This is not enough to win and he will enter into a runoff with the Green League (VL) candidate, Pekka Haavisto, in two week’s time.

Third in the race was Paavo Väyrynen of the Centre Party (KESK) and he took 17.5% of the vote. Timo Soini of the True Finns who did so well on an anti-EU ticket last year managed just 9.4% of the vote. The two front runners are both pro-EU candidates.
