Runoff on 21st August

The Cape Verde presidential election on Sunday was inconclusive, forcing a second round runoff which will take place on Sunday 21st August.

Jorge Carlos Fonseca of the opposition Movement for Democracy (MFD) was the leading candidate with 37.4% of the vote.

Manuel Inocēncia Sousa, the official candidate of the ruling African Party for Independence of Cape Verde (PAICV) came second with 33.3% of the vote and will face Fonseca in the runoff.

The third candidate, a rebel PAICV member, Aristides Lima, who stood as an Independent won 25.9% of the vote. The fourth candidate, another Independent Joaquim Monteiro took 2.1% of the vote.

The president is more of a figurehead than occupying an executive role.
