Runoff on 8th November

Published

With 96% of the votes counted a second round presidential runoff is now expected on 8th November.

With 1,162,729 votes counted the incumbent president, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf of Unity, has 44% of the vote. Winston Tubman of the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) is second with 32.2% and will face the president in the runoff.

On Saturday all opposition candidates had said that they would boycott the election and seek a recount of the votes. Now that it has become clear that there will be a second round Tubman has decided to go ahead with the runoff.

The potential ‘kingmaker’ in the election is the third placed candidate in the first round, Prince Johnson a former rebel. He took 12% of the vote and any candidate he endorses is likely to receive the majority of the vote from his supporters.
