Saakashvili accepts defeat
Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili has accepted that the electoral bloc of his main rival, the billionaire Bidzina Ivanishvili, has won the parliamentary election.
In a televised address Saakashvili has conceded that the Georgian Dream bloc has the lead and should form the next government. Partial results appear to show that the opposition is ahead in the party list vote, which accounts for 77 of the 150 seats. However, Saakashvili has warned that a win for Georgian Dream is more likely to mean a move back to Russian influence.
President Saakashvili will remain in office until elections take place next year, but with his opponents in power and Ivanishvili likely to be the next prime minister, it will not be an easy time.
