Published

President Nicolas Sarkozy’s UMP took a further battering in the second round of the local elections yesterday (Sunday 27th March 2011).

The main opposition Socialist Party was the main winner, taking 36% of the vote, whilst the UMP polled just 20%.  The National Front did not do quite as well as in the first round, taking 11.7% but they did win two cantons for the first time.

Over the two rounds 2,026 of the 4,039 council seats were contested, 460 in the first round and 1566 yesterday.  The new councillors will serve for three years.  Turnout was low at around 46%.
