Sassou Nguesso re-elected President

Published

Incumbent President Sassou Nguesso has won the presidential election in the first round with 60.39% of the vote and 867,179 votes. In second place was Guy Brice Parfait Kolélas who took 15.5% of the vote.

The constitution was amended last year to allow him to stand for a third term; although in various guises he has run the country for 32 of the last 37 years. The opposition are claiming widespread fraud including a communications blackout during polling day which they say was designed to prevent observers from monitoring the vote properly.
