SCAF will leave power early if clear first round winner

Published

The Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) have said that they will relinquish power a month early, on 24th May if there is a clear first round winner in the presidential election.

The decision comes after days of violent protests around the Defence ministry by protesters complaining about the exclusion of candidates from the race and the lack of progress in the Egyptian ‘Arab Spring’ revolution. At least twenty people have died in the violence in the past few days.

The presidential election is due to take place on 23rd and 24th May with a second round if needed on 16th and 17th June.
