East Timor

Second round runoff in progress

Published

East Timor electors are voting today in the second round runoff for the presidential election. The vote is between Taur Matan Ruak and Francisco Guterres Lu Olo with the former slightly ahead in the opinion polls.

In the first round of voting Guterres of FRETILIN took 28.76% of the vote whilst Ruaktook 25.71%. There will be around 620,000 voters voting at 850 polling stations between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m. local time.

The campaign has been remarkably peaceful so far and if the general election in July is equally peaceful then the likelihood is that Australian peacekeepers will start returning home.

The new president will be sworn in on 19th May.
