Second round runoff in progress

Around 7.3 million electors are voting in a second round runoff today for a new president.

The contest is between Patriotic Party (PP) candidate Otto Pérez Molina, the runner up in 2006 and Manuel Baldizón of the Independent Block Renewed Democratic Freedom Party (LIDER).

A recent opinion poll in the Prensa Libre newspaper puts Otto Pérez Molina on around 58.5% of the vote and Manuel Baldizón on 41%.

Polling stations will be open from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. local time. Results aren’t expected until tomorrow and the new president will take up his post on 14th January 2012.
