Second round runoff inevitable

A second round runoff on 30th October now looks inevitable for the position of president.

Ruling party candidate, Rosen Plevneliev of the ruling Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria (GERB) is reported as getting around 40% of the vote according to exit polls and 39.7% of the vote according to a part result announced by the Central Election Committee (CEC).

His main rival, Ivailo Kalfin of the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP), was on 30% of the vote and 29.8% according to the part results released by the CEC.

The two candidates will face each other in the runoff Plevneliev the favourite. Third placed candidate, Meglana Kuneva took around 14% of the vote and has indicated that she will not favour either candidate but leave it up to her supporters to make up their own minds.

More complete results are expected late on Monday or early Tuesday. Meanwhile GERB won the mayoralty of Sofia and several other key towns.
