Second round voting in general election for remaining 68 seats

The second round of the general election in Lithuania takes place today. In the first round the 70 proportional representational national list were decided with the centre left Labour Party (DP) and Social Democratic Party of Lithuania (LSDP) beating the incumbent government party Homeland Union – Lithuanian Christian Democrats (TS – LKD). Three of the 71 constituency seats were also decided.

In the first round on 14th October the results for the top three parties were:

Labour Party (DP) led by Viktor Uspaskich took 18 seats in the 141 seat parliament
Social Democratic Party of Lithuania (LSDP) took 16 seats
Homeland Union – Lithuanian Christian Democrats (TS – LKD) took 13 seats.

Four other parties won seats.

In today’s election the parties will be vying to win the remaining 68 constituency seats with voters expected to continue punishing the Homeland Union for their years of austerity measures. A coalition government of the Labour Party, Social Democrats and one other smaller party is the likely outcome.
