Senate results show ten of twelve incumbents ousted

Published

Results of the 20th December Senate election, in which half of the 30 Senate seats were up for election, have been announced.

The results were bad news for President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf. Her son, Robert Sirleaf failed to win a seat in which he went head to head with former soccer star and presidential candidate George Weah. Weah took 78% of the vote for the Montserrado county seat which includes the capital Monrovia.

Of the 12 Senators standing for election ten failed to hold on to their seats and the President has lost around seven of her stalwarts in the process. The final results gave the President’s Unity Party just four seats. Weah’s Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) took two seats and the Liberty Party (LP) also took two seats. Four other parties took one seat and three independents were elected.
