Senegal has a new president

Published

President Abdoulaye Wade conceded defeat last night in the presidential election which has gripped Senegal since late last year.

There were concerns that Wade would not accept the result of the second round runoff on Sunday, but instead he conceded defeat even before official results were announced. Macky Sall is said to have a commanding lead in a large number of precincts, but no results have, as yet, been published.

Doudou Ndir, the Chairman of the Autonomous National Electoral Commission (CENA), has said that people should wait for the results to come out before celebrating. Those results are expected later today or tomorrow.

President Nicolas Sarkozy of France was the first to congratulate Macky Sall.
