Septuagenarians in second round runoff

The second round runoff for the presidential election will be between 73 year old Manuel Pinto da Costa who led in the first round with 35.82% of the vote and 70 year old Evaristo de Carvalho who took 21.82%.

In a distant third place, Maria das Neves took 14.03% of the vote, with ten candidates in total standing in the first round last Sunday.

The turnout amongst the 92,000+ voters was 66%. An Electoral Commission spokesman has told AFP that the next round will take place on 7th August (not 24th July as originally reported), with campaigning starting on 27th July and ending on 5th August.
