Shavkat Mirziyoyev appointed interim President; election on 4th December

Published

Uzbekistan’s parliament has appointed Prime Minister Shavkat Mirziyoyev as the country’s interim president following the death of Islam Karimov last week.

The job should have gone to President of the Senate Nigmatilla Yuldashev but he ruled himself out saying that he did not feel qualified to hold the post.

As a result of the death of Islam Karimov a fresh presidential election must now take place within three months and the Central Election Commission (CEC) has decided to hold a fresh election on 4th December. The election campaign will start on 9th September.
