Snap general election called for 3rd April

President Nursultan Nazarbayev has called a snap general election for 3rd April 2011.

The decision was taken after the President rejected moves by the Parliament to attempt to introduce a referendum to delimit the President’s terms of office.

President Nazarbayev has been in power since 1991 and is expected to stand in the forthcoming election.  By calling the election now he has cut short his existing term in office by 20 months.
