Slovenia

Snap poll in December

Published

President Danilo Turk has called a snap general election following the collapse of the government in a no confidence vote last week (20th September).

The poll for the 90 Deputies in the National Assembly will take place on 4th December; parliament will be dissolved on 21st October.

Although the president had the option to call for a new government after the no confidence vote, no party came forward and it was clear that politicians wanted an early poll.

The previous poll in 2008 was won by the Social Democrats. They formed a coalition government with three other parties, Zares, the Liberal Democracy of Slovenia (LDS) and the Democratic Party of Pensioners of Slovenia (DeSUS). Zares and DeSUS left the government earlier in the summer.

Polls would suggest that the centre right opposition Slovenian Democratic Party (SDS) and their partners will win the election.
